Elevator
by Brian Kunde
Evening came around to SUL,
Bringing work there to a lull.
On the upper floors of Meyer,
In each heart flared one desire.

"Let us all get out of here:
Time for us to go -- oh, dear!
Where the heck's the elevator?
I have never known it later.

"'Vator, 'vator, in the shaft,
Will you come, or are you daft?
We've been standing here a while;
I and others, single file.

"Come up, car: approach our floor,
Stop, and open up your door.
Show some sign, that will betoken
You are working, and not broken.

"Tedious it is to wait.
Hurry up! It's getting late!
'Vator, wither do you roam?
Get up here! Let us go home!"

Woe! The elevator doesn't:
Though they wished it there, it wasn't.
It was halted for repairs,
And they had to use the stairs.
