"The Time of Your Life" - Thursday, May 8, 3:30 pm

"The Human Comedy" (MGM, 1943, starring Mickey Rooney, with Van Johnson and Donna Reed) is set in the imaginary town of Ithaca in California's Central Valley, modeled after the Fresno of Saroyan's youth. The film tracks the young Homer Macauley, a telegraph messenger boy played by Mickey Rooney, through his loss of innocence as he delivers news from the war front to families. Originally drafted as a screenplay by Saroyan, The Human Comedy became his first novel, and he was awarded an Oscar for Best Original Story for the film.

"The Time of Your Life" (Cagney Productions, 1948, starring James Cagney, 109 min.) recreates on film Saroyan's 1939 play, which earned him a New York Drama Critics Circle Award and a Pulitzer Prize. The story takes place inside Nick's, a San Francisco bar modeled after the saloon run for many years by Izzy Gomez on Pacific Avenue near the Embarcadero. Cagney is Joe, a fixture at the bar who encourages everyone in their dreams. The cast also includes William Bendix as Nick, Jeanne Cagney as Kitty Duval, and a memorable performance by James Barton as tale-spinning cowboy Kit Carson.

3. New Slavic Cataloger and NACO Coordinator

We are delighted to announce the arrival of Joanna Dyla, the latest addition to cataloging staff. A former Slavic Catalog Librarian at the University of California, Berkeley, Joanna joined us on May 1st. She will have a key dual assignment which is reflected in her title, Slavic Cataloger and NACO Coordinator. Her appointment fills behind Tatiana Barr, former Slavic serials cataloger, and in part behind Willy Cromwell who served as the manager of our NACO program until January of this year when she left Stanford to join the staff of RLG.

Joanna's primary duties will include cataloging Slavic serials and other non-book formats, and carrying out responsibilities as a NACO Coordinator and Liaison with the Library of Congress. As a certified NACO trainer, she'll continue to provide NACO training to other U.S. libraries as part of her appointment. Having served as NCCP/BIBCO cataloger at Berkeley, she'll also bring invaluable experience to our own fledgling BIBCO program.

We are genuinely pleased that Joanna is here. Please join us in welcoming her to our midst. You'll find her on the 4th floor of Meyer or in the Galvez Modular.
