Some of you may not have made it to the training sessions for staff taught by RISC, but you can still get the handout. I have a number of paper copies, or you can get it off the web at
A section of this handout covers the differences between Socrates and Socrates II. For example, author searching is very different. If you love to search by author's last name and first initial, your best bet is to use the Browse screen and the PA index. However, if you want to search by a first or middle name in combination with title, subject, or whatever, with Socrates II you can do that. This comes in handy when you can't quite remember the spelling of the last name or you aren't sure how it's been transliterated. This is just one of the features covered in the handout. If you have any questions about searching Socrates II, especially if you cannot find the answer in the helps, contact me.

Effective January 16, 1997, Willy Cromwell-Kessler joined The Research Libraries Group as Library and Bibliographic Services Officer. As part of the Library and Bibliographic Services Team at RLG, she will be involved with developing standards, content of the RLIN database, dataload planning, and metadata issues for digital and electronic resources.
Willy came to Stanford Libraries in March of 1986 as Head of the Humanities Cataloging Section. She has moved to progressively broader assignments as Principal Cataloger/NACO Liaison, and Co-Chief of the Catalog Department. Most recently she served as Catalog Development Coordinator with responsibility for overseeing database management, serial and electronic resources cataloging and classification on receipt. She was an integral member of the SUL Redesign Team. In less than a decade of association with Stanford, Willy has gained significant national prominence through her work in ALA cataloging/standards groups in the areas of computer files, electronic resources, and rationalized cooperative cataloging. She currently serves as the Chair of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) Standing Committee on Standards. Willy leaves us with a superb record of dedicated accomplishment and will be missed by many here who benefited from her bibliographic skills, her team support, and her unfailing integrity. We wish her all the best in her new position at RLG.
