1. In Memorium--W. David Rozkuszka

W. David Rozkuszka died Friday, January 10, from HIV-related lymphoma. David came to work in the Stanford Libraries in 1967 and he retired in 1994. While at Stanford, David served as foreign documents librarian, as Head of the Jonsson Library, and as international documents librarian and African and Middle Eastern bibliographer. His legacy to Stanford--to the faculty and students--is a superb collection of foreign and international documents built on the foundation of a deep and broad understanding of governments and their publishing patterns and on years of developing personal relationships with foreign government publishers and international vendors. David possessed both vision and tenacity, and Stanford benefited from both attributes.

In addition to building collections, David worked to make these materials accessible to the Stanford community. He clearly understood the research process and the value of primary resources, and he unstintingly worked to share his expertise and illuminate the paths to bibliographic access. Innumerable Stanford dissertations bear a thank you and a tribute to David for his assistance. David also illuminated the work lives of his colleagues. Will we ever forget Davina or Trixie, David's Halloween alter egos? We laughed as we flinched and concluded that only David could "pull it off." We are poorer for the absence of his wit, his humor, and his daring.

Beyond the Libraries, David also left a legacy and an impact. His work on the Stanford Committee for Land and Building Development insured architectural integrity within the University and adherence to the vision of the early builders. Maintaining vistas was of particular importance to David, and many a Stanford tree owes its location to David's insistence that no vista be blocked.

David also served as a member of the Committee for African Studies and the Canadian Studies Advisory Group. His work to develop Canadian Studies at Stanford coupled with his urbanity and high spirits led to frequent visits to the Canadian Consulate in San Francisco and smoothed the way for the acquisition of Canadian publications.

Honors abounded. Recognition of David's contributions by GODORT (Government Documents Roundtable) of the American Library Association resulted in the establishment of a scholarship in David's name for library school students working in the area of government documents. Of all his honors, he was most proud of becoming a Librarian Emeritus.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, February 8, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Grace in Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. A reception will follow at the cathedral.
