1) Technical Services Staff Changes
Fall Quarter finds us in the midst of many staffing
changes in Technical Services.
- October 31st ended a fourteen month staff exchange
between Tom Holt, SUL Technical Services, and Kent
Abbott, GSB Technical Services. Kent came to the
Monographic Receiving Group to assist in the ]
streamlining of cataloging duties within the receiving
function -- a major tenet of the TS Redesign
recommendations from two years ago. He has been
responsible for the receipt and assessment of books
and data from our Yankee Book Peddler shelf-ready
program. Tom covered Kent's duties in GSB as Head
of Cataloging and also distinguished himself with his
completion of number of special projects. Both
brought with them skills in cataloging and talents in
managing groups and projects. These two staff
members took the risks and inconveniences inherent in
temporarily changing jobs and fitting into new
cultures. They demonstrated admirably an extended
commitment to two organizations. They deserve
enormous thanks from all of us and walk away with
new skills and knowledge to apply to their current and
future positions.
- Vitus Tang will spend half time through
March 31, 1997 assisting in a joint project of
Computer Sciences Department (CS), Registrar's
Office, ITSS, and SUL-AIR to develop a working
prototype of a new information system technology
developed in CS. In its concept, the information
system automatically integrates multiple information
sources and thereby provides users with the illusion
that they are using a single information system. Vitus
enters into uncharted waters here but brings to the
project his considerable library expertise in building
data and in knowing how people approach looking for
information.
- Tom Holt, upon re-entry into cataloging full time at
SUL, immediately was reassigned to serve as Serials
and Electronic Cataloging Coordinator in Meyer for
the half time that Vitus is working on the Information
Network project.
- Sue-Ellen Johnson (formerly Bohn) came to us Nov.
18th from the Hoover Institution as Monographic
Receiving Group Coordinator; in essence, she is
Vickie Seymour's replacement. She brings to us
excellent acquisitions, cataloging, and management
skills and will lead fast track implementation to
completion. As manager of all of Monographic
Receiving, Sue-Ellen also will work to further
rationalized the combined functions of receiving and
copy cataloging.
To help us catch up with production backlogs created
during Unicorn implementation, we have reassigned
some or part of existing staff to the Payments Group.
We have hired 3.5 FTE temporary staff to help with
tasks that do not require a major training investment
but can support the increased production of our
existing staff. With these changes, we expect to make
significant progress to catch up over the 6 months of
these special assignments.
Bravo!
