I am very pleased to announce that Diane Carrier began work as Operations Manager in the Jonsson Library on September 9. She comes to the Stanford University Libraries with 5 1/2 years of related library circulation & stacks supervisory experience in Cambridge, Massachusetts, including over two years at Harvard's Littauer Library (1989-91) and three years at the Lesley College Library (1991-94). In Jonsson, Diane will supervise the circulation, stack maintenance and processing operations, serve on the reference desk, and perform a variety of administrative duties. Diane can be reached by e-mail (carrier@sulmail) or phone (5-1033). Please join me and the rest of the Jonsson staff in welcoming Diane to SUL.

Terrie Rizzo from HIP sent the following note:
I wanted to let you know about a great class scheduled to start next week that is VERY convenient for SUL/AIR folks, since it'll be held in 103 Lou Henry Hoover. The class is called "Relax at Noon", and will be held on Wednesdays, noon-1:00 pm, from 10/9-11/13. The fee is $60, which can be paid by check or STAP fund eligibility.
The class is described as follows: Learn and practice stress reduction and relaxation techniques in this six-week course. Each class will include guided breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, visualization, and self-hypnosis. Learn to let go of stress incurred during the busy work-day. Actually relax at noon!
Also convenient for library personnel are the noontime Healthy Back/Strong Abs classes, with the Tuesday/Thursday section, taught by Jerrie Thurman, in the Ford Center Gymnastics Room, and the Monday/Wednesday section, which I teach, in the Arrillaga Center Gym. These classes, which cost $65, also are eligible for STAP funds. These classes have just started up this week, 10/1 through 12/5, but people can join in late with no problem.
None of the above involve aerobic activity, so no one has to shower after class -- a great advantage!

Retirement Program Redesign--especially important for those employees currently in the Staff Retirement Annuity Plan (SRAP).
Last November all staff received a letter from Barbara Butterfield outlining a number of changes and enhancements to Stanford's retirement plans. One of the major changes is that beginning January 1, 1997 all regular employees (exempt and non-exempt) with a year of service who are not covered by a collective bargaining agreement will be eligible to participate in the Stanford Contributory Retirement Plan (SCRP). SCRP had previously been available to exempt staff and faculty only. Eligible non-exempt employees have been participating in the Staff Retirement Annuity Plan (SRAP).
Staff who are currently in SRAP should have received (at their home address) a package of enrollment materials. If you have not received this package and think you should, please let me or Cathy Jara know.
It is imperative for you to review these materials as soon as possible because you will need to make decisions about your retirement plan by November 1, 1996. Included in the package is a schedule of enrollment meetings which are taking place at various locations during the month of October. We could arrange to have a session for SUL/AIR staff who are currently in SRAP. Please let me know if you are interested in such a meeting.

Direct Office Supply, PO Box 691757, Los Angeles, CA 90069, is soliciting Stanford's business.
The footer on the FAX indicates that "your order will be shipped an billed by our service company, Interstate Distribution Center, Culver City, CA". Stanford Procurement has no formal or informal working relationship with either business entity and does not recommend either one.
Apparently, someone is telephoning various departments saying, "Gene Larson", the Xerox supervisor, is calling. The story is that toner prices are "going up". A confirming FAX will be sent to you.
The unsolicited offering of Xerox toner is at $437.42 a carton. Volume discount is priced at $398 per carton. Please note that we do not have an agreement with that company and that Xerox does not have a representative working with it either. Suffice to say, those prices are hyperinflated, literally.
You can obtain the quoted toner supplies through a Campus Wide Agreement for significantly less. Please pass this information to secretaries, administrative assistants and administrators in your workgroup (or anyone else who might buy or speak to someone about buying toner). And, remember, *Caveat Emptor*!
