NOTIS RELEASE 6.0 TO BE INSTALLED MARCH 3

Installation of NOTIS release 6.0 in production will take place on Sunday, March 3, and will require that NOTIS be unavailable before noon. This release incorporates Phase II implementation of Format Integration to the USMARC bibliographic format, which validates the use of all USMARC tags across all forms of material. The most obvious change for casual users of NOTIS bibliographic records will be some rearrangement of the fixed field displays.

Socrates changes to accommodate format integration were made on February 24. At the same time, logic was added to display the URL (856 subfield u) in call number position for electronic resources cataloged for the locations AIRT, ELECL, and ELECR. SETTING HOLDINGS IN OCLC

Using OCLC records as the basis of cataloging requires that we "set holdings" in OCLC which indicate that Stanford owns a copy of the bibliographic item. This holdings indication is critical for Interlibrary Loan and collection development programs for libraries across the country and beyond. SUL and Hoover have not yet set holdings manually in OCLC but have planned for doing so by tapeload sometime in the future.

That day came last Monday when Matthew Ahmed mailed to OCLC 61 tapes containing 2.8 million bibliographic records for Hoover (HIN) and SUL (STF). OCLC will begin setting holdings based on these records in 3-4 weeks. They estimate the entire process will take upwards of six months. We will ftp monthly records to OCLC to keep us current. This project has been on our "To-do" list for five years; many thanks for accomplishing it to Rita Lunnon, Janet McCarthy, Jim Cruse, Ray Deutsch, and Matthew Ahmed.

NEW FOLIO FILE: APPLIED SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

A new file was recently added to Folio. Applied Science & Technology (AST) Index provides **cover to cover** indexing of more than 390 periodicals in science and engineering. Coverage includes trade and industrial publications, journals issued by professional and technical societies. One of the nice things about this file is that Stanford owns most of the journals that it indexes.

Coverage ranges from October 1983 to the present and it is updated monthly. Earlier years, back to 1918, can be searched in the print version that is available in the Engineering Library.

Got any questions? Contact Karen Greig in the Engineering Library, engref@forsythe.

SIMEON WEB PAGE AVAILABLE

In case you weren't aware of it, there is a Web page containing lots of tidbits about using the new Simeon email client software on the Sulmail machine. This is not a replacement for the manual, but it does cover some of the topics you might find useful, such as:

IMPORTANT NOTE: Because we have purchased Simeon for SUL/AIR staff only, people attempting access this web server from a machine that is not part of the "stanford.edu" domain will be denied access.
