         Chinese name: Tán Enmei. American author of Chinese ancestry best known for her fiction on mother-daughter relationships. Her children's book Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat (1994) is the basis for the PBS animated series of the same title.

             A group of Chinese American immigrant women and their daughters get together for Mahjong and meals and tell stories of their lives. Adapted to film in 1993, with Tan collaborating on the screenplay with Ronald Bass.
