The Yearling. 1938.
Jody Baxter, a boy living in the backwoods of Florida in the late 19th century, adopts a
fawn named Flag. The story follows their lives together amid family strains, conflict with a
neighboring family, privation and the death of Jody's best friend. Ultimately Flag's appetite
for corn, on which the Baxters depend for survival, means he too must die, precipitating an
emotional crisis for Jody. Adapted to film
in 1946, stage (as a musical) in 1965, anime in 1983 and television in 1994.
