Jones, James, 1921-1977.
Full name: James Ramon Jones. American author born in Robinson, Illinois, best known for
his semi-autobiographical novels of World War II and the time after. A co-founder of the Handy Writers'
Colony in Marshall, Illinois. Father of novelist Kaylie Jones.

From Here to Eternity. 1951.
The novel follows the lives of a number of soldiers stationed at Schofield Barracks on the island
of Oahu, Hawaii in 1941, focussing on Private Robert E. Lee Prewitt, hazed for refusing to participate
in his company's boxing club. Meanwhile Sergeant Milt Warden is having an affair with the captain's wife.
The action culminates in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. This is an adult novel with subject matter
inappropriate for minors. Followed by sequels The Thin Red Line (1962) and Whistle (1978), the
latter completed posthumously by Willie Morris. An unusual feature of the series is that while the three
novels share a number of the same characters, the characters are given different names in each book.
Adapted to film in 1953 and television in 1979 and 1980.
