Ishiguro, Kazuo, 1954-
British novelist originally from Japan, born in Nagasaki. Known for atmospheric,
elaborately plotted narratives told from ambiguous or subjective viewpoints. In
addition to the work below he is best known for his earlier novel, An Artist of
the Floating World (1986), which won the Whitbread Prize.

The Remains of the Day. 1989.
Retrospectively told story of the English butler Stevens, who completely subjugates
his personal feelings to his perceived duty in the service of Lord Darlington, a
Nazi-deluded aristocrat obsessively involved in the fruitless pursuit of peace with
Germany prior to World War II. Missing or denying himself the opportunities to connect with
others, Stevens ultimately comes to the poignant conclusion that his life has been wasted.
Winner of the Booker Prize in 1989. Adapted to film in 1993 and radio in 2003.
