The House of the Spirits. 1985.
English translation by Magda Bogin of Allende's debut novel La casa de los espíritus,
originally published in Spanish in Chile in 1982. It was named that country's best novel of the year
and received its Panorama Literario award; the book has been translated into more then twenty
languages. The novel is the troubled multi-generational saga of the Trueba family through the turbulent
history of the Latin American nation in which it is set. The viewpoints are largely those of the flawed
family patriarch, Estaban Trueba, and his granddaughter Alba.
Adapted to film in 1993 and to stage in 2007 and 2009.
