Adams, Douglas, 1952-2001.
Full name: Douglas Noel Adams.
English writer whose early career was primarily in radio and the stage. His magnum opus
began as a BBC radio series in 1978, and much of his later efforts involved recreating and
extending it in other media. These efforts include the series of novels which constitute its definitive
expression plus a TV series, a record album, a computer game, a number of stage adaptations, and the
2005 motion picture, the screenplay of which was completed by other hands after his early death.
His remaining works generally retain the wry sense of humor exhibited in Hitchhikers.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. 1979.
Really funny science fiction. The interstellar travels of Arthur Dent, modern British nobody,
rescued from the destruction of the Earth by his friend Ford Prefect, actually an alien and a
contributor to the guidebook of the title. But it gets better. Really. Don't judge it by the movie.
Followed by sequels The Restaurant at the End of the Universe (1980), Life, the Universe
and Everything (1982), So Long and Thanks for all the Fish (1984), and Mostly
Harmless (1992).
