When substantial amounts of proprietary data need to be analyzed, or if software needs to be developed, I will generally prefer to function as a research director, with much of the work being done in-house by the client organization, or by one of the management consulting firms which specialize in staffing such projects.

When (as is often the case) I am either too busy to consult or not knowledgable enough about the problem in question to be the appropriate consultant, I am happy to suggest more appropriate consultants with expertise in particular areas of game theory or experimentation, or in particular markets and lines of business.
