Installing Sophos Anti-Virus 9
On this page:
Sophos Anti-Virus is Stanford's site-licensed anti-malware software. It can protect your computer against viruses, adware/spyware, and other malicious software.
Sophos Anti-Virus updates itself automatically so your version of the program and the virus definitions are always up-to-date.
Install Sophos Anti-Virus
Stanford's Sophos Anti-Virus installer will automatically uninstall Webroot Spy Sweeper and Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate Edition if these programs are installed on your computer. This can result in the installation taking up to 10 or 15 minutes. Do not stop the installation once it has started.
The installer will attempt to remove any other antivirus programs that you have installed. To be on the safe side, if you know you have an antivirus program other than Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate Edition, it is recommended that you manually uninstall it before installing Sophos Anti-Virus.
- Run the Sophos Anti-Virus installer file.

- When prompted to continue with the installation, click Yes.

- The installation can take several minutes (more than 10 minutes is not uncommon if both Spy Sweeper and Symantec Antivirus will be removed). During this time you will see messages informing you about the status of the installation.

- After the software has been installed, you will be prompted to start a virus scan. Click Yes.

- If you are prompted to restart Windows, click Yes to restart now.

Scan your computer
After installing Sophos, IT Services recommends that you scan your hard drives(s) to detect any viruses and malware that may already exist on your computer. If you chose to scan your computer when prompted during the installation, the scan will start automatically and run in the background. If you did not choose to start a virus scan, you can do so at any time.
Note: Scans can take a while.
- Right-click the Sophos icon
(located in the notification area in the lower right corner of your screen) and then click Open Sophos Endpoint Security and Control.
- The Sophos Endpoint Security and Control main window is displayed.
- If the virus scan is running in the background after the installation, you can monitor the progress in the Active summary section, located in the lower-left corner of the window.
- If you did not choose to do a virus scan during the installation but want to do one now, click Scan my computer.

- If the virus scan is running in the background after the installation, you can monitor the progress in the Active summary section, located in the lower-left corner of the window.
- If you started the scan (instead of it starting automatically after installation), a dialog box will display the progress.

- When the scan has finished, the results summary is displayed. Click Close to close the summary.
Note: Items that are found during scanning but cannot eliminated automatically are moved to Quarantine. See the Sophos online help for information about managing quarantine items.

Set up a new scan
You should scan your computer at regular intervals to detect viruses. IT Services recommends that you scan your hard drives weekly. You can schedule a scan so that it will run automatically at a specified day and time.
Note: You must be a member of the Sophos Administrator user group on your computer in order to be able to set up a new scan.
- If Sophos is not open, right-click the Sophos icon
(located in the lower right corner of your screen) and then click Open Sophos Endpoint Security and Control.
- In the Sophos main window, click Scans.

- Click Set up a new scan.

- Enter the following:
- Scan name: enter a name for this scan.
- Items to scan: check the box for your hard drive. (Doing this automatically selects other items, too.)

- Click the Schedule this scan link near the bottom of the window.
- Select how often and when you want the scan to run:
- Enable schedule: checked
- Days when the scan will run: select the day you want to run the scan
- Times when the scan will run: select a time when your computer will be on but not under heavy use. Click Edit to change the default time.
- User name: this should be filled in automatically. It is the name you use to log in to your computer.
(For computers that are joined to the Active Directory, the User name is in the form of WIN\sunetid.) - Password: enter the password you use to log into your computer.
- Confirm password: re-enter the password you use to log into your computer.

- Click OK.
- Click Save to save this scheduled scan.

- The new scan will be listed under "Available scans" in the Sophos Scans window.

Configure Sophos Anti-Virus
Sophos Anti-Virus is preconfigured with the optimal settings for the Stanford environment. However, you can customize the settings for your situation.
To change the default configuration settings:
- In the Sophos main window, click Configure anti-virus and HIPS.

- The configuration options are displayed. See the Sophos online help for information about the configuration option settings.
