Introduction
The last 50 years have been "productive" ones for the cigarette industry.
Currently, the industry manufactures over six trillion
cancer sticks per
year worldwide, a three-fold jump in what it was producing annually back in the 1960s.
Where is this growing torrent of manufacturing occurring today?
The
Cigarette Citadels project explores that question and
others about the global tobacco industry. Our goal is to locate all factories producing cigarettes worldwide and
expose information about their practices.

Where is this growing torrent of manufacturing occurring today?
The Cigarette Citadels project explores that question and
others about the global tobacco industry. Our goal is to locate all factories producing cigarettes worldwide and
expose information about their practices.
Use this map to explore our data base of cigarette factories. Here is what you can do.
- Explore the map
- View the spatial distribution of factories for major corporations, most popular brands,
and most common corporate spending categories.
- See which factory locations we have exactly pinointed and for which ones we only have
approximate location information. This is where we could use your help!
- Search for a particular term to select factories from our data base that match this term, for example "health".
- Search for any location and see where the closest cigarette factories are. How many factories are around where you live?
Or type in "World Health Organization".
- Explore the factories
- Click on the markers to zoom in and view detail information about the factory.
- Explore the detailed surrounding of the factory in satellite imagery and streetview.
- A search box below the close-up map allows you to search for landmarks around the factory, search for example
for "school", "hospital", "airport".
