Limitations

  • Literalness of computer operations
  • Dependence on index policy; knowledge of index policy essential
  • Dependence on indexer viewpoint
  • Some questions are not appropriate for computer searches:
    • general information about technique
    • when browsing is helpful
  • Computerized file often covers fewer years than printed index
