Introduction to Spectroscopy: How to Access Introduction to Spectroscopy Version 2.0

In order to use Introduction to Spectroscopy, you must have a Macintosh computer and be connected to SUNet, the Stanford University Network. The program is stored on a Residential Computing Server and may be accessed anywhere on campus. Because the program is copied to your hard disk, you need to be using System software version 6.x or 7.x (2004/08/30: This page has not been updated in a while.) and have a minimum of 4MB RAM and a minimum of 5MB of free hard disk space. A color monitor is recommended. Below are instructions for placing a copy of the program on your hard disk. (FYI, you select items by highlighting an item and then double-clicking on it with your mouse.)

Step 1: Go to Chooser under the Apple Menu.

Step 2: Select Appleshare in the upper left window and ResComputing in the lower left window.

Step 3: Select ResServer in the window on the right.

Step 4: Login as “guest.”

Step 5: Select ResComp Public. Note that an icon for ResComp Public will appear on your desktop.

Step 6: Copy icon called Software Librarian.

Step 7: Select folder called “Classes.”

Step 8: Select item called Introduction to Spectrocopy and copy it to your hard disk (must copy to hard disk, cannot copy to your desktop). Also copy Software Librarian icon and place in your System Folder. You must restart your Mac before using the program. Note: Software Librarian does not work yet with Power Macs.

You can either leave the program on your hard disk or trash it when you are finished. The ResComputing server is configured to let 50 people use the Introduction to Spectroscopy at one time.

Introduction to Spectroscopy is not available on the computers at Swain Library. Please contact Grace Baysinger, Swain Librarian, if you need further help (graceb@stanford.edu, 5-1039).
