Germ Stories, by Arthur Kornberg
Over the years, Nobel laureate Arthur Kornberg regaled his children and grandchildren with rhyming tales of the tiny beasties in the germ parade. Arthur’s poems and stories are now available for all in this beautifully rendered children’s picture book. Germ Stories will bring the microscopic world to life for the very youngest readers and grown ups alike with its richly imaginative narrations and its vividly rendered art and color photos.

Swain Library has updated its webpage on Off-Campus Access to Stanford Library Resources. The new page includes detailed instructions on how to use Citrix for off-campus access to databases such as SciFinder Scholar, Beilstein/Gmelin via Crossfire, Cambridge Structural Database, NIST Surface Structure Database (NIST SSD), and CASSI (Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index).

Connotea is a free online reference management and social bookmarking service (see article at doi:10.1045/april2005-lund), that recognises and stores DOI names, enabling bookmarking a DOI name directly. Connotea will convert the DOI name to a web link and retrieve the citation information for that DOI name from CrossRef. The Connotea bookmarklet also allows users to highlight and bookmark a DOI name from within an article web page.
Swain Library has created a webpage about Digital Object Identifiers (DOI). The DOI system aims to assign permanent, unchanging identifiers to online content.

The 88th edition of the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics is now available online. In addition to the new and updated tables, it offers a foreword by Sir Harry Kroto, Nobel Laureate, and 59 tables that were previously in older editions of the Handbook.
The new web edition contains tables covering 5 new topics:
- Properties of Ionic Liquids
- Solubilities of Hydrocarbons in Sea Water
- Solubility of Organic Compounds in Superheated Water
- Nutritive Value of Foods
- Properties of Organic Semiconductors
And 7 of the most heavily used tables have been extensively revised and updated:
- Critical Constants
- Heats of Vaporization
- Aqueous Solubility of Organic Compounds
- Thermodynamic Properties of Air
- Dipole Moments of Molecules
- Bond Dissociation Energies
- Properties of Fundamental Particles
10 more tables have been made interactive and are now searchable by name, formula, and numerical properties.
Two new sections:
- Tables that were previously removed from older print editions for reasons of space — Appendix C
- Subject index giving you the same easy browsability as the print — Section 20

Except for Chemistry and Biology and the Tetrahedron Package, print subscriptions for all of Swain’s Elsevier journals were converted from “print plus online” to “online-only” subscriptions, effective January 2008. Freed funds are being used to provide online access to the titles below. Online holdings below are available now. Swain’s Journal List will be updated soon to reflect these changes.
