Artists's comment: "This drawing was produced as the Frontisepiece for the Breeding Bird Atlas of Santa Clara County, CA .
Walt Koenig, who has been studying Acorn Woodpeckers for more than 40 years, has shown that these birds are so closely
tied the annual acorn crop that in some years they'll breed in the fall and in others, when the crop fails, they'll relinquish their territory.
Weather is a key factor in acorn abundance. It's low in El Nino (wet) years." |
