Tom Grey

Emeritus Law Professor Tom Grey lives on campus and has photographed nearly all of the species found here and more than 500 species in all. Stanford is a good place to see raptors. Several species, including both shown here, are resident year-round. Others visit seasonally, and some pass by on migration.

Stanford Note: While the Cooper’s Hawk (below) is fairly common throughout campus, foraging on birds (often Western Scrub-Jays, Mourning Doves, and House Finches) in virtually any habitat type, the White-tailed Kite (above) is more common in the adjacent foothills.

Tom Grey noted that the pair of kites in this photo were performing this courtship display late in the season, on Independence Day, 2012.
