American Robin (Turdus migratorinus)

Artist's comment: "It always amazes me how animals in nature often seem to be able to adapt to human habitation. This work was part of a series of works done with bridges and their structure as the main subject. As I always try to work an animal or bird into my compositions, it seemed quite natural to include the nesting robin."

Science Art Note: Among North American perching birds (passerines), of which there are some 470 species, only one-in-four use a nest hole or build a domed structure for nesting. All of the others--including the Amrican Robin featured here--construct an open nest. See the Masterbuilders essay.
