Black-crowned Night Heron

Artist's comment: "I borrowed a bit from Hokusai, the Japanese wood block artist, in the pattern of the slashing rain."

Science Art note: During the drought, these birds, which tolerate traffic, have been seen in early evening on campus in the grassy area between the Quad (and its pedestrians) and the Oval (and the car and bus traffic streaming past). It is thought that the ground is damper there, and easier to probe for prey.
