These day-hunting birds nest in cavities, natural ones found in large dead branches and snags, and human-constructed sites and nest boxes.

On campus, the bird is an uncommon resident, nesting in tree cavities, Acorn Woodpecker holes, and occasionally in buildings (including Poli Sci and the old Chemistry building on Lomita Drive) and foraging in grassy habitats. The individual shown here can often be seen at the Dish.
