In 2009, Robert Heuter, director of the Center for Shark Research at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Florida, reported a depletion of between 75 and 90 percent of the Hammerhead Sharks (Sphyrna spp.) in the Gulf of Mexico.
