I didn't focus on any environmental changes in particular, but the narrative does
show how some people can get focused on technology and not notice
what's going on around them.

The rich, insular biota of Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater has been well studied for several decades, and has served well as a laboratory of population ecology. Genetic assays conducted on the crater's lions in the 1980s revealed the entire population to have descended from a mere 15 individuals after an epizootic devastated them in 1963. Eight were thought to be survivors of the disease, while the rest were males that could now enter from the surrounding Serengeti.
