The hind talons of the Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja) are the size of tiger or grizzly bear claws, and transmit enough pressure to crush the bones of sloths, monkeys, or other prey it snatches from the forest canopy. As with many other birds of prey, the presence of a Harpy Eagle is thought to indicate the health of the forest's ecosystem, as top predators are often among the first to disappear when their habitat is altered. Where the Harpy Eagle thrives, the tropical forest--along with all other species it contains--thrives as well.
