Frogs are the only amphibians found in Madagascar, and 99 percent of the frog species are believed to be endemic to the island. The discovery of hundreds of new species, even in well-inventoried areas, was announced as recently as 2009, leading scientists to believe that many more remain undiscovered. Studies suggest that the total biodiversity on the island could be much higher than thought. Where biodiversity is concerned, Madagascar remains one of the most critically threatened areas in the world—estimates indicate that only about eight percent of its original forest cover remains intact.
