Archeological research, intensified by the Malta agreement, revealed much
about the past in the Netherlands. About 5000 years ago, the climate was
warmer, and the landscape wild, wet and untamed. Most of this country
consisted of wetlands, and people from the coastal Vlaardingen Culture
temporarily settled on the low river dunes along creeks in this huge tidal
area. From there they fished the creeks and hunted for wildlife, such as
Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus crispus).
Remnants of such a settlement, as well as bones of this bird, and the layout of some creeks were uncovered near Vlaardingen. These were the scientific basis for this reconstruction of the ancient Vlaardingen landscape. This illustration is rendered from a digital 3D environment. The pelican was painted in gouache and added later.
