I am an artist interested in fluid dynamics from the artistic and scientific points of view. This is an image of ink in water undergoing surface tension driven flow. It is of interest to those studying fluid dynamics, the science of diffusion, and materials research. Two types of ink, white and purple, were placed on gold paint at the point marked by the bubble. They have expanded outward, reacting differently to the same outward force of the radial spread. The white ink is more diffuse than the purple ink, which tends to move in thin undulating lines around the edge (although there is also some purple filming). The inks are moving fast (upward jets) and do not have time to mix.
Through movement we understand something of the different chemistry of the inks. The pattern produced is axisymmetrical about the horizontal line; parts of the pattern are delineated by the ink edges. Artistically, with its complex symmetry and restless quality, this image has echoes of the Baroque period.
There is more work at my site including a write up that contains a section about different kinds of inks and my paper in Journal of Visualization 12:2 April 2009, pp.173-180. Patterns of Ink in Water and Air: Creating radial spreads of ink in water.
