Charles Darwin spent great effort demonstrating the amount of individual variation within a species because this was the material upon which his concept, natural selection operated. Here, three White-leaf Frogs show the range of variation in color patterns. So marked were the extremes that the frogs were considered separate species until genetic studies demonstrated otherwise. In addition, Darwin’s conception of a "Tree of Life," in which speciation gives rise to all species from common ancestry, is represented in my drawing by the branch, with the extreme forms looking as if to contemplate speciation to their own yet connected branches.
