Harlequin Ducks seek rapids for breeding and rearing young. They are named for a comic theatrical character, whose traditional costume is recalled by their strikingly patterned and colored plumage. Indeed, to look at them as depicted in field guides, it is a wonder that they aren’t all in the gullets of Gyrfalcons. However, when seen in their preferred breeding habitat and as I have taken pains to paint them here, it becomes obvious how evolution has fine-tuned them to their environment with the colors and shapes of rocks and current and even the flying flecks of foam from the whitewater.
