This is a collection of images of soap film--arranged like museum samples--that were collected over several weeks using both vertical and
horizontal soap film apparatus. Each sample was chosen to represent a stage in
evolution, where plants and animals evolve from a primordial mixture (top left)
through plants and sea creatures towards the higher animal forms at the end of the
sequence (bottom right). The ‘latin’ labels give the viewer a chance to guess the
identity of each sample--for example, Mixtura primordialis is primordial mixture or
soup; Arcus agaricus translates as "rainbow mushroom."
Many forms have a bilateral symmetry, which links them with the shapes of plants and animals. The forms grow in ways reminiscent of those found the plant and animal kingdoms--"stems" of plant-like vortices elongate as they push through the oncoming film, and black tadpole-like forms elongate, their "tails" trailing behind them--intriguing examples of how
growth and form are inextricably
linked.
