This painting depicts the life-giving form of “Mother Earth.” She "gives birth" to all forms of life--microbes, plants and animals--and is the "mother" of earthquakes, storms, floods and fires. All life forms return to "Mother Earth" in death, and are consumed and recycled by Earth’s powerful forces. Earth discharges cosmic functions as a creator, preserver and destroyer. James Lovelock famously borrowed the godess' name for his Gaia Principle, which sees Earth functioning like a discreet, self-regulating organism.
