On his extensive sea voyages Darwin must have experienced and wondered at the diversity and specialised niche of the pelagic zone. The passage and migratory movements of sea birds demonstrate all of the mechanisms and interactions between environment and behaviour, which drive the evolutionary process. Pelagic species provide key indicators of global environmental change, and present an aesthetic elegance, power and grace within what is at times the most passive and equally the most hostile and alien environment.
