The Black-chested Eagle-Buzzard (Geranoaetus melanoleucus) is mostly a bird of the Andes, its distribution following that mountain range for its entire length. The only modern member of its genus, it is related to the smaller Buteo genus. The IUCN considers this hawk a Species of Least Concern because of its wide range. Nonetheless, it is typically rare, and its status varies locally. In some places, such as Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, and in parts of Argentina, it benefits from deforestation, while in others it is subject to losses such as the use of strychnine baits by sheep farmers to eradicate pests. Monitoring by citizen scientists can help confirm that this widespread, but rare, species remains locally stable.
