Fight or Flight was inspired by human decisions that directly or indirectly affect the ecosystems of our planet. I chose Brown Pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) to express this statement in part because they are social birds constantly cruising the airways, often in search of food, and in part because they are often seen gliding through the air in perfect sync, as a single unit matching wing beats and air speed--precursors, seemingly, of fighter jets in a formation. That parallel, of flying in sync, subtly, becomes the foundation for this piece, as viewers connect the jet steam in the background to the four birds, and see that the combination can be interpreted as both our role in their world and as synchronized efforts where “network processes influence decision-making for sustainability” that “enable strategies to resolve conflict and promote more effective collaboration and learning”, which are required to overcome the challenges to attaining sustainability in the 21st century.
