SPSS 16 for Mac bug workaround: email program crashes when attaching .sav file
[From SPSS tech support:]
Resolution number: 74684 Created on: Dec 14 2007 Last Reviewed on: Jan 3 2008
Problem Subject: Trying to attach an sav file to an email within a web browser crashed the browser with SPSS 16.0 installed.
Problem Description: I am using SPSS 16.0 for Mac. When I use my Mac to compose an email from within a web browser (such as Yahoo.com) and then try to attach an SPSS data file, it immediately crashes my browser. I have tried two browsers (Safari, Firefox) on my Mac and received the same result. This problem only occurs with SPSS attachments (not with Excel, Word, Ppt, PDF, etc. attachments). If I use the same site on a Windows machine PC, I can attach the SPSS file and send it out without it crashing.
I could send SPSS files as attachments without incident before I installed SPSS 16.0.
What is wrong?
Resolution Subject: This problem has been reported to SPSS Development - Workaround Available
Resolution Description:
This problem has been reported to SPSS Development. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. Please see the workaround described below.
Please try compressing the files you want to send (which is recommended when transferring files via email). If you do not have a compression or zip utility you could rename the file to include a different extension and then rename the file once it is received in the email.
This problem has been filed with SPSS Development. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. At present there is no workaround available.

SPSS 16.0 - How do I view and edit output created in previous versions of SPSS for Windows?
The SPSS 16.0 for Windows CD (full version only) contains an application called "Legacy Viewer" which is formerly known as "SPSS 15.0 SmartViewer". If you wish to view and edit output created in previous versions of SPSS, please install the Legacy Viewer and open the older output using that application. Legacy Viewer is also available for download from the SPSS Support website:
The web site can be found at http://support.spss.com/. You will need a Technical Support login and password. To get a Technical Support login and password, choose the "Login Options" from the menu, and then choose the "Request a Login" link. Once you are logged-in, choose "SPSS" under "My Product View". Next, select "Utilities", then "SPSS for Windows", and finally "Legacy Viewer".
For users of the SPSS Graduate Pack, Career Starter, and Faculty Pack products, you can download the Legacy Viewer from the following location:
http://support.spss.com/newSupport/Student/Utilities/SPSS/index.html
There is no Legacy Viewer for old output (.spo) files for SPSS 16.0 for Macintosh. There are no plans for one to be created. We must ask that you regenerate your old output in the upgraded version. If you feel strongly about having this for SPSS for Macintosh, please contact product marketing at suggest@spss.com. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Compatibility of SPSS files (.sav, .sps, .spv, .spo) between different versions
The SPSS dataset (.sav) file is backward and forward compatible, so you should be able to share your dataset between versions. One thing to note, SPSS 12 and later allow more than 8 characters for your variable name (old versions can only have a max of 8). This feature is not backward compatible, so if sharing with SPSS 11 and older, one should ensure that the variable names don't exceed 8 characters in SPSS 12 and later files so that earlier version can open and work on the dataset as well - if not, the variable names will be truncated.
The SPSS output files (.spo or .spv with charts, tables, etc) are generally not backward compatible, so outputs created in a later version of SPSS can't be opened in earlier versions. Beginning with SPSS 16, output files are written in the .spv format. Therefore, it is not possible to read older .spo files directly into SPSS 16. The SPSS 16 for Windows CD-Rom includes a Legacy Viewer (SPSS 15.0 Smartviewer) which should be installed on machines where .spo files may need to be read. These files should be opened in the Legacy Viewer.
The SPSS syntax files (.sps): please be aware that some syntax commands have been updated or removed in later versions, so you may find some commands not working in earlier or later versions of SPSS.

From SPSS Technical Support: SPSS Proactive Notification - Potential Issue with automated file save in SPSS 16.0.x
SPSS Technical Support has recently detected a problem in SPSS 16.0.x whereby modifications are made to an existing data file and the file appears to save, yet the file is missing from the system. This problem can occur if you exit the application without explicitly saving your file first. This problem has been observed when working with larger size data files or saving to a slower device (such as over the network) such that the saving process takes longer than 3 seconds. It is strongly advised that you do not save your files in this manner until the issue is addressed which is slated for the next maintenance release.
SPSS is evaluating the most appropriate solution but until it is available, always save your file explicitly via File->Save or the save toolbar button prior to exiting the application.
If you have any questions or problems, please contact your local SPSS support team (http://support.spss.com/contactus.asp ).
SPSS apologizes for any inconvenience this has caused.

SPSS Text Analysis for Surveys demonstration
Jun 3, 2008
United States
Begins at: 11:00 a.m. CT
Duration: 45 minutes
Maximize survey research value with open text responses.
Open-ended survey questions allow people to express themselves in their own words; and give researchers rich new insights into attitudes and preferences regarding service, purchase decisions, product design, employment, operations, whatever the issue under study.
If you’ve limited your surveys to close-ended questions due to the time and expense of reading and manually coding text responses, this session can be your organization’s first step toward maximizing the value of your survey data.
Created specifically for open-ended survey responses, SPSS Text Analysis for Surveys uses proven technologies in computational linguistics to make it far more powerful than typical text-coding procedures. It allows you to categorize hundreds, even thousands of responses in a fraction of the time it would take to do so manually. Then easily export results for further analysis and graphing.
Gather interested co-workers and register now for this SPSS survey research software demonstration. You’ll discover:
- How to turn text into quantitative data
- How to save even more time by automating the creation of categories and the coding of responses
- How to uncover category relationships using visualizations such as bar charts and tables
- How to export results to Excel, SPSS or other software for analysis
- And more!
Find out how easy it is to capture the power of text responses for your survey research.

SPSS Proactive Notification - Deleting variables from dataset may generate subsequent incorrect results with SPSS 15.0.1 dated November 22, 2006
NOTE: If you are not running SPSS 15.0.1 dated November 22, 2006 - please disregard this email.
SPSS Technical Support recently detected a problem with SPSS 15.0.1 dated November 22, 2006. Deleting variables in a dataset may cause data to be incorrect upon subsequent transformations. This only occurs when variables are deleted interactively from the user interface or invoking the DELETE VARIABLES syntax command. This would be apparent when a new variable is generated in the active dataset.
SPSS is evaluating the most appropriate solution but until it is available, the workaround would be to cache your dataset after deleting a variable. From the data editor go to File->Cache Data and choose Cache Now. Via command syntax, please add the CACHE command following every DELETE VARIABLES command.
If you have any questions or problems, please contact your local SPSS support team (http://support.spss.com/contactus.asp ).
SPSS apologizes for any inconvenience this has caused. We are continually striving to provide more proactive communication to our clients.
