CSES Announcement: Free APSA Short Course

New Opportunities, New Challenges: The CSES & EES Data Sets
Wednesday, September 2, 2009, 9:30am – 5:00pm
Toronto Convention Centre Room 202A, Toronto, Canada

This course is free, but registration is required.
Please register with Jill Wittrock (email: jill.wittrock@politics.ox.ac.uk).

The CSES and PIREDEU are offering a joint short course on electoral research using data from the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems (CSES) and the European Election Studies (EES) series. The CSES is a collaborative program of research among election study teams from around the world. The CSES is unique among comparative post-electoral studies because of the extent of cross-national collaboration at all stages of the project: the research agenda, the survey instrument, and the study design are developed by the CSES Planning Committee, and this design is then implemented in each country as part of their national post-election studies. The resulting data are deposited along with voting, demographic, district and macro variables. The PIREDEU project aims to design an infrastructure for research into citizenship, political participation and electoral democracy in the member states of the EU. The goal of PIREDEU is to provide a comprehensive empirical database under the auspi ces of the EES. In the field of electoral studies, the EES is one of the very few cross-system, cross-temporal datasets, and the only comparative data project that combines cross-national voter surveys with elite, media, manifesto and contextual data.

The CSES contributors will provide participants with a broad overview of the rich data set that constitutes the CSES, to develop an appreciation of the wide variety of research questions that can be addressed with CSES data, and to explore some of the methodological challenges that are involved in using multi-level data. The ESS contributors will provide participants an introduction to the content and the analytical possibilities of the EES as an instrument of comparative studies on electoral politics, political parties, political behavior, representation and European integration. The topics covered will include the different components of the EES, information on the contents of available data, and a discussion of the methodological possibilities and challenges related to the use of this data set. During the afternoon session, the instructors will assist participants on issues and concerns that arise in their own research.

The short course is ideally suited for both graduate students and faculty members who are working in these areas and who would like to know more about the current state of cross-national electoral research. You may find more information about CSES at http://www.cses.org and PIREDEU at http://www.piredeu.eu/

Course Details

The objective of this course is to provide the participants with a thorough background on survey methods for comparative measurement of socio-demographic background variables. The emphasis will be on ensuring equivalence in the elaboration of survey questionnaires. Practical and theoretical considerations for the design and implementation of fieldwork instruments aimed to compare European countries will be discussed. In international comparing survey research the researchers need specific techniques for transferring variables from one national context to another. During the last decade the techniques of translation were developed very effective. Different national census offices and different networks of survey researchers established their procedures. In harmonizing background variables for comparative survey research techniques were discussed but only a small number of accepted measurement instruments are available. The course deals with techniques, procedures and experiences in harmonizing socio-demographic variables.

Juergen H.P. Hoffmeyer-Zlotnik, PhD in Sociology at University of Hamburg, Habilitation in Sociology at University of Cologne, since 2004 extraordinary professor at University of Giessen, is expert adviser for survey research and researcher at the GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences, Department: "Center for Survey Design and Methodology" in Mannheim, Germany. In the 1980s he developed the Socio-Demographic Standards for Germany together with the national statistical office of Germany, the German market research association and the German association for academic social research. Since the end of the 1990s he is doing research on harmonizing socio-demographic/socio-economic background variables for international comparative survey research. Together with C. Wolf he is the editor of the book: "Advances in Cross-National Comparison. A European Working Book for Demographic and Socio-Economic Variables".

Uwe Warner, PhD in Social Sciences at University of Giessen, is "conseiller scientifique" at the "Centre d'Etudes de Population, de Pauvreté et de Politiques Socio-Economiques / International Network for Studies in Technology, Environment, Alternatives, Development (CEPS/INSTEAD)" in Differdange, Luxembourg. He is the national coordinator of ESS in Luxembourg; he was responsible for the Luxembourgian data collection and data integration into ECHP; he is in charge of carrying out various national surveys in Luxembourg. Summer Methods Workshops at Indiana

The Karl F. Schuessler Institute for Social Research Intensive Program at Indiana University is pleased to announce two one-week workshops in research methods for Summer, 2007. Our workshops provide intensive instruction by premier faculty in a congenial, interactive environment. They are designed to benefit graduate students and faculty who seek to hone their skills in specific areas as well as professionals in business, health research, and government. Both workshops will be held in Bloomington, Indiana.

Workshop I
Social Network Analysis: Theory and Methods
June 11-15, 2007

Instructors: Professor Bernice A. Pescosolido and Professor Stanley Wasserman, Indiana University

This workshop will be offered through the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) Summer Program. It covers the theory and methods of network analysis. Unlike Network Analysis: An Introduction (taught in Ann Arbor), this course covers not only methodology, but also theoretical concerns and substantive backgrounds of network studies. It is designed for students, faculty, and other researchers in the social and behavioral sciences who are interested in learning how to translate theoretical conceptualizations of networks into empirical practice. Morning and afternoon sessions are coordinated so that each day presents theoretical, historical and substantive developments in the field with parallel issues and examples in data and analytic techniques. Workshop participants apply those techniques in late afternoon, computer lab sessions. Registration for the Social Network Analysis workshop will be available through the ICPSR website in late February (http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/training/summer/index.html).

Workshop II
Qualitative Methods
July 9-13, 2007

Instructor: Professor Sue E. Estroff, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

This intensive workshop is designed as a multi-method exploration of qualitative inquiry for students and scholars who have some experience with research, and would like to deepen their familiarity and facility with various qualitative data collection and analysis techniques. It is most appropriate for students, faculty, and other researchers who have a specific project at present, or planned in the near future, that can serve as a foundation for work in the class. Through a combination of readings, exercises, discussion, writing, and presentation, participants will engage with the theoretical foundations of qualitative research as well as gain hands-on experience with diverse qualitative techniques. The workshop covers but does not focus on the use of software programs for coding and analyzing text data. Prospective participants who wish to focus on coding software should seek out other forms of training. The class is limited to 14 participants to allow for substantial interaction with the faculty and other students in dyadic or other small group settings. Significant participation in selecting directions for the class will come from the participants. Registration for the Qualitative Methods workshop is available beginning February 1, 2007 at www.indiana.edu/~isr/isrip.

You can find more information about both workshops at www.indiana.edu/~isr/isrip or by contacting the Schuessler Institute’s Director of Research, Jane McLeod, at jmcleod@indiana.edu.

From MEPS list: Upcoming MEPS/HCUP Workshop

AHRQ will sponsor a workshop in early September to facilitate the health services research community in using data from two AHRQ databases: the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) and the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP). The workshop will provide researchers with information on the components and capabilities of the two databases, and will teach participants how to extract data for research projects. Both databases have national and regional health care data. Participants will be given the opportunity to attend sessions on MEPS and/or HCUP; have an opportunity to bring up specific research; and participate in a hands-on session for MEPS, HCUP or both. A working knowledge of SAS is required.

This workshop will be held at the Eisenberg Building located at 540 Gaither Road, Rockville, MD 20850 on September 6-8. There will be a minimal charge for attending.

In order for AHRQ to assess interest level and resource allocation, please let us know if you would like to attend the workshop, and your preference for MEPS, HCUP or both, by sending an email to workshop06@ahrq.hhs.gov. Your email will be used as an indicator of interest and does not constitute a commitment to attend. Registration will be required and announced at a later date.

The Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) collects data on the specific health services that Americans use, how frequently they use them, the cost of these services, and how they are paid for, as well as data on the cost, scope, and breadth of private health insurance held by and available to the U.S. population.

MEPS is unparalleled for the degree of detail in its data, as well as its ability to link data on health services spending and health insurance to the demographic, employment, economic, health status, and other characteristics of survey respondents. Moreover, MEPS is the only national survey that provides a foundation for estimating the impact of changes in sources of payment and insurance coverage on different economic groups or special populations of interest, such as the poor, elderly, families, veterans, the uninsured, and racial and ethnic minorities.

For more information about MEPS, please visit: http://www.meps.ahrq.gov

The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) is a family of powerful health care databases, software tools, and products. Sponsored by AHRQ in partnership with more than 35 state data organizations,

HCUP includes the largest all-payer, encounter-level collection of longitudinal health care data (inpatient, ambulatory surgery, and emergency department) in the U.S., beginning in 1988. HCUP data enable research on a broad range of issues related to health care, including cost and quality of health services, medical practice patterns, access to health care programs, and outcomes of treatments at the national, State, and local market levels. In addition, HCUP makes available at no charge a number of software tools to facilitate use of HCUP and other administrative data.

Workshop Description - Demographic Analysis Using the 2000 Census
The one day Census Workshop will teach participants to perform in-depth demographic studies using the 2000 U.S. Census. Participants will learn what information is available on the 2000 Census and how to easily extract the specific data they need. Each student will learn how to present detailed demographic data in compelling new ways.

State and Federal grants increasingly require in-depth demographic study of the population you serve - this hands-on workshop will teach you how to succeed.

A highlight of the workshop is when each student learns to create custom thematic maps showing detailed variations of the demographics within their community. Thematic maps allow students to map their community and “shade” the map to show which neighborhoods have the highest concentrations of numerous demographic variables such as poverty, income, race, age, ancestry, educational attainment, disabilities, etc.

The teaching philosophy of the workshop is very much “hands-on” - during the workshop, each student has access to their own PC on the internet and will learn to create a compelling demographic profile of the California community of their choice.

Workshop Description - Using Census Data in GIS Mapping (Using ArcView 9.0)
The two day GIS workshop focuses on using Census Data and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in concert. This workshop is specifically designed for those involved in community planning, program design, proposal writing, needs assessments and fundraising.

The class gives you the step by step instructions to map data from your internal databases (Access Database or Excel spreadsheet) and then “layer” or shade the map to show detailed Census data.

In other words, the workshop will teach you how to create compelling maps by bringing together:
Detailed Census Data - thus “shading” the map for race, poverty, income, education, housing, etc.
~ and ~
Internal Database Data - thus creating Points of Interest or “dots” on the map representing specific addresses or locations. Each “dot” can represent a client receiving specific services, a certain type of building, the addresses of donors, etc.

*GIS Class Prerequisites
To take the Using Census Data in GIS Mapping workshop we strongly suggest that you first take the Demographic Analysis Workshop. You also need intermediate computer skills and a basic understanding of databases or spreadsheets.

During the GIS workshop you will use a copy of ArcView owned by Calm River Demographics.
