The ICPSR Summer Program
Since its inception [in 1962], the Consortium has offered the ICPSR Summer Training Program as a complement to its data services. The Summer Program provides a comprehensive, integrated program of studies in research design, statistics, data analysis, and social science methodology. Its instructional environment stresses integration of methods of quantitative analysis within a broader context of substantive social research. Instruction is grounded in interactive, participatory data-analysis utilizing high-end, networked microcomputers. Because of the range of methodological instruction, the opportunity for intensive study, and the quality of instruction and supporting facilities, the Summer Program has become internationally recognized as a preeminent forum for basic and advanced training in the methodologies and technologies of social science research and instruction.
There are two four-week Summer Program sessions, with intensive seminars, special workshops that provide participants with opportunities to examine the impact of various methodologies on specific substantive issues, and workshops that address the practical objectives of providing technical support for computing specialists and data librarians. In addition, research scholars who have made important contributions to the development of social methodology present informal lectures focusing on their most recent research interests.
Participants in each year's Summer Program generally represent about 25 different departments and disciplines from over 200 colleges, universities, and organizations around the world. While sociology, psychology, and political science continue to be represented by the largest number of participants, the increasing number of individuals from across the social and behavioral sciences illustrates the breadth of interest in and impact of the Program.
The Mission of the Summer Program
To offer instruction for the primary development and "upgrading" of quantitative skills by college and university faculty and by nonacademic research scholars
To extend the scope and depth of analytic skills for graduate students, college and university faculty, and research scientists from the public sector
To furnish training for those individuals who expect to become practicing social methodologists
To provide opportunities for social scientists to study those methodologies that seem to have special bearing on specific substantive issues
To create an environment that facilitates an exchange of ideas related to the development of methodologies on the frontier of social research

ICPSR acquires National Election Pool (NEP) General Election Exit Polls
ICPSR is pleased to announce the availability of the National Election Pool (NEP) General Election Exit Polls, 2004 (ICPSR 4181) and the National Election Pool Democratic Presidential Preference Primary Exit Polls, 2004 (ICPSR 4183) through FastTrack. The NEP replaced the Voter News Service (VNS) and appointed Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International as the sole provider of exit polls.
Studies on FastTrack are public use files that have not yet been fully processed by our staff. This system provides quick access to the study while the files undergo full processing. An announcement will be made as soon as the fully processed files are available.

ICPSR Revises File Naming System
On January 10, 2005, ICPSR made major changes to the way it identifies data and documentation files. Users who download files should note the following changes:
* All files will include Windows-style suffixes
* Files will have simple text names, rather than acronyms or codes
* Files will include the study number and dataset number (where appropriate) in the file name
* Files will be bundled into study- and dataset-level folders
* File-level information is now recorded in a separate document called the file manifest, instead of within the Readme file.
Our goal is to make the file labels meaningful for our users, and to use a file naming system that does not force users to rename files in order to use them with their preferred statistical packages.
For example, with the old file naming system, if you downloaded datasets 1 and 2 for study 6849, the file names on your desktop looked like this:

As a side note, we are dropping the term "data definition statements" and using the term "setup files," which is more commonly used in the social science community.

Roper Center Data Acquisitions Update, January 2005
Click here for a list of new additions to the Roper Center data archive. By following the links associated with each study listed, you will find documentation files (PDF) for these studies. Stanford University Libraries maintains a membership to the Roper Archive and Stanford faculty, staff, and students can order data from the Archive. To request specific data files, click on the "Data Services - Roper" link for information on ordering Roper data.
This month the PDF contains abstracts and catalog links for all of the 2004 Edison Media Research/Mitofsky International National Election Pool (ABC News/Associated Press/CBS News/CNN/Fox News/NBC News) Exits Polls conducted November 2, 2004 which consist of a national sample datasets and 51 state sample datasets including the District of Columbia.

ICPSR MyData System
MyData includes a new user registration and authentication system for the ICPSR (Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research) Web site. The system will create a more secure environment for users and will also enable them to sign up for notification services that ICPSR is developing. MyData has features similar to many popular Internet Web sites:
- Uses an email address as a login ID
- Requires a password for Web site authentication
- Allows users to create an account and set preferences
- Allows registered users to reset a forgotten password
- Enables users to view prior download history
ICPSR has updated the "shopping cart" software that works with the new MyData system. Some of the enhancements you can expect as part of MyData include:
- Faster display of download pages
- Faster bundling/saving for later download
- Smoother operations for downloading large studies
When a user begins to download data via MyData, s/he will be prompted either to log in as a returning user or to create a new account. When a user creates a MyData account, s/he will be asked to complete a brief questionnaire about user preferences.

ICPSR Direct: Instant Access to Data
ICPSR has a service that provides direct access to social science research data for all students, faculty, and staff at its member institutions. You can now directly download data from ICPSR to any computer on the Stanford central campus network. For more information about this service, visit our ICPSR page.
