From 1864 to 1869, Alfred A. Hart took 364 pictures along the line of the Central Pacific Railroad, from Sacramento to Ogden, California, in order to help solicit investment in the railroad. Jesse White then retraced Hart's journey between 2008 and 2011, taking photographs from exactly (or approximately) the same sites. We invite you to explore this collection of historic and modern photos to compare how the line and the landscape changed over 150 years.
