Sources of information about patents
The Transfer Officer should try to answer any questions raised by
Investigators. If you cannot resolve a question, you may want to refer to

- Detailed rules of practice pertaining to patent procedures are found
in CFR 37, Revised July 1987, Subchapter A, Part 1.
- CFR 37, Revised July 1987, Chapter IV, contains detailed regulations
concerning
- - the rights to inventions by nonprofit organizations, including
universities, and small business firms under contracts, grants or
cooperative agreements and small business firms under contracts,
grants or cooperative agreements
- - the licensing of government-owned inventions.
- The exact form and content of the patent application and the
associated cost vary considerably according to the type of invention. It
does not have to be "formal," but it does have to be clear and
precise. The patent attorney should be involved in preparing the
application. At the risk of redundance, it is not being suggested that
Investigators or the Transfer Officer should submit patent applications
without professional help. It is a often a highly specialized and
time-consuming process.
