Investigators: H.F. Machiel Van der Loos, PhD and Charles G. Burgar, MD Summary: The goal of this project is to create an educational videotape for use by persons returning home after their initial stroke therapy. The tape documents correct vs. incorrect transfer performance and patient-specific therapist recommendations. This type of home program is hypothesized to increase educational carryover from the clinic to the home and decrease caregiver injuries resulting from improper transfer techniques. The F-PAT generic tape for transfers includes preparation instructions, wheelchair to/from sitting position as well as sit-to-stand segments (assisted and unassisted). The videotape editing instructions can be learned by a person with prior computer expertise with an estimated 1-2 weeks of training. A WWW-based, password-protected site has been set up to perform the evaluations, and has been fully implemented. Description: F-PAT is a video-integrated database retrievable over the World Wide Web. The database features video clips of a subject performing functional activities, and is designed for evaluation of function, treatment planning, and record keeping. This server uses the WWW to access a VA patient database in Filemaker Pro 3.0. The database, featuring video clips of a subject performing functional activities, is designed for evaluation of function, treatment planning, and record keeping. Findings: The F-PAT generic tape for transfers has been made. It includes preparation instructions, wheelchair to/from sitting position as well as sit-to-stand segments (assisted and unassisted) . The instruction is based largely on NDT-derived techniques, and is practiced by VA physical therapists at the VAPAHCS Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center. The videotape editing instructions can be learned by a person with prior computer expertise with an estimated 1-2 weeks of training. A WWW-based, password-protected site has been set up to perform the evaluations, and has been fully implemented. A personalized training videotape has been made of one test subject, and we are actively recruiting more subjects.
