4Grossberg (1976) has addressed this problem in his very similar system. He has proved that if the patterns are sufficiently sparse and/or when there are enough units in the cluster, then a system such as this will find a perfectly stable classification. He also points out that when these conditions do not hold, the classification can be unstable. Most of our work is with cases in which there is no perfectly stable classification and the number of patterns is much larger than the number of units in the inhibitory clusters.
