Stanford vs. Cal - Maritime

On December 5th, Stanford hosted the Cal Maritime Keelhaulers in our traditional final game of the pre-season. As one of the premier Division II teams in the country, the last several years have seen several closely fought matches between the Cardinal and Keelhaulers. This contest was no different.

Stanford managed to strike first, with outside center Riley English scoring in the fifth minute. The drive was begun when blindside flanker Trevor Grace blocked a kick, allowing eight man Paul Morrissey to take possession and set up English. Unfortunately, Maritime was able to equalize the score minutes later. Neither team was able to convert on the kick.

The Cardinal got on the scoreboard again twenty minutes in, with wing Chase Richard outpacing the Maritime for a long try down the far sideline. Richard's run was brilliantly set up by the Cardinal backline off a turnover ball near midfield. However, Maritime once again was quick to respond and with neither team successful on the kick, the score was tied once more.

Just before the half, Stanford was able to take a lead off a penalty in Maritime territory. Rather than kicking for points, the Cardinal took the ball in hand off a quick tap. Inside center Julian Brooks powered the ball in for another five points. The score after forty minutes: Stanford 15, Maritime 10.

Coming in after the half, the game continued on with both sides demonstrating their physical sides. There were numerous stoppages for trainers and blood subs. Maritime again managed to tie the game with about twenty minutes remaining. The teams continued to fight at a stalemate until the 78th minute. Awarded a penalty within thirty meters of the Maritime try zone, Stanford put the game in the hands of scrumhalf Dan Ibarra. Ibarra converted the kick for the game's final points: Stanford 18, Maritime 15.
