Stanford vs. St. Mary's

On January 31st, 2009, Stanford traveled across the Bay to Moraga to face St. Mary's. The Cardinal came out firing, driving in the first 3 minutes deep into St. Mary's territory. Number eight Johnny McCormick then kicked a successful drop goal after a St. Mary's penalty. St. Mary's responded with two successive tries, but Stanford answered with scores from flanker Josiah Hall and fullback Charlie Hazlehurst, making the score 15-14. Unfortunately, this would be the last time Stanford held the lead. Though fighting hard for the rest of the game, Stanford eventually lost 66-20. Stanford's last try came from outside center Stephen Brown in the 76th minute. Despite the recent tough losses, Stanford is prepared to rebound as the team enters into the second half of league play.

Stanford vs. Sacramento State

On January 24th, 2009, Stanford faced off against Sacramento State in the first away game in Northern California league play. It was a close game, but Stanford lost the physical confrontation 32-24. Scoring for Stanford were hooker Chris Riklin, prop Jason Prestinario, center Marcus Henderson, and wing Nick Mendoza. Number eight Johnny McCormick made two of four conversions. Sac State had 5 tries and drop-goal, converting two of five kicks. Stanford scored the go ahead try with just minutes left on the clock, but Sac State was able to block the conversion to maintain a one point lead. A final try and conversion by Sac State sealed the game.

Stanford vs. BYU

BYU began their season with a tour of the west coast, playing Davis and Stanford over a three-day span. BYU vs Stanford kicked off at midday, January 17th, and marked the first time the two teams had met in recent history. The game was ferocious from kickoff and Stanford rose to the occasion, pressuring BYU relentlessly on defense and forcing a couple early turnovers. However, BYU was able to capitalize on Stanford's early turnovers, and lead 19-0 heading into the half hour mark. Stanford mounted an attack before halftime, and after several phases of keeping the ball in the forwards, some slick passing saw John Clark diving over the line for a try. A conversion from Johnny McCormick left the score at 19-7, but another try before the half saw BYU leading 24-7. The second half saw renewed ferocity from the large BYU side, and their fitness and athleticism proved too much for Stanford. The final score was 64-7 - a large margin, but the game was invaluable for Stanford's development.
