Stanford vs. University of Nevada - Reno

On Saturday, January 10th, Stanford hosted their first home league game of the season, squaring off against University of Nevada - Reno at Steuber Rugby Stadium. Stanford came into the game with momentum, winning their first five games of the season and having just completed a four day mini-camp in San Diego. The extra work clearly paid off, as the game was a rousing success for the Cardinal.

Outside center Tommy Kramer led off the scoring, breaking through the Reno defense to make the game 7-0. Open side flanker Dan Ibarra soon followed, taking a pass from blind side flanker Eric Whitney and breaking several tackles to score in the corner. The next try came from inside center Marcus Henderson, set up by a well-placed pass from Kramer. However, Reno managed to stay in the game, scoring on an intercepted pass and a blocked kick. At half time, the Cardinal maintained a narrow lead, 19-12.

In the second half, Stanford's pre-game emphasis on defensive structure finally paid off, with Reno unable to get on the scoreboard again. Furthermore, the Cardinal's wide open style continued to generate offense. Number eight Johnny McCormick got things going, taking a stolen ball ninety meters for a try. Later, scrumhalf Travis Lehman capitalized on a gap in the Reno defense, sneaking the ball in off of a Stanford scrum on the Reno five. The next try came off a penalty, with Kramer taking the ball to the try line, before prop Jason Prestinario took it over for the score. Great play by the Stanford back line led to more success, with fullback Charlie Hazlehurst, wing Eliot Luscombe, and Kramer finishing the scoring. The final: Stanford 64, Reno 12.
