Stanford Alumni Game

On November 23rd, Stanford Rugby hosted its annual alumni game. Given the impressive alumni turn-out, a full eighty-minute game was played, with breaks every twenty minutes. Though the atmosphere was friendly, a fiercely competitive match soon ensued. Alumni winger Jonathan Hofius broke open the game with a try at the corner, in what turned out to be the first of many for the alumni team. Among the other scorers for the Alumi were Shawn Dahlem, Brad Bachelder, Mike Velcich and Dennis Shanagher. Scoring for the Stanford squad were center Stephen Brown, hooker Eric Whitney, and fullback Charlie Hazelhurst with a hat trick. However, at the end of the day the Alumni prevailed, 67-27. As always, the current members of the club relished the opportunity to get on the pitch with their coaches (recent alumi Chris Gaines, Dylan Arena, and Ian Abernathy), welcome back graduated teammates (Jonathan Hofius, Alex Shih, Brad Bachelder, Richard Jones, Ryan Rennaker, Mike Velcich) and get to know the other alumni whose generosity enables the club to enjoy the privileges it has today. After the game, the current team joined the alumi in singing the club song and kicking back to enjoy some barbecue to finish out the afternoon.
