Stanford First XV vs. Santa Clara University
On Sunday, November 2nd, Stanford's 1st XV squared off against Santa Clara University at the Steuber Family Rugby Stadium. While the 2nd XV's game had to be canceled due to the wet conditions, the weather cleared up in time for kickoff at 11 am.
SCU came out strong, scoring in both the fourth and eleventh minute. However, they only managed to convert one of the ensuing kicks, making the score Santa Clara 12, Stanford 0. Stanford then came back with a vengeance, scoring five tries in a row to close out the first half. Open-side flanker Daniel Ibarra punched in the first try in the fifteenth minute; Johnny McCormick's kick was just wide. This was followed by fullback Charlie Olson's long try four minutes later, with the kick good to tie the score at 12. Travis Lehman, at scrumhalf, broke the tie with a try at twenty-two minutes, with the kick just wide again. McCormick, playing at number eight, then scored two tries of his own, converting both kicks, in the twenty-sixth and thirty-eight minutes. Stanford went into half-time with the score at 31-12.
After the half, Stanford kept up the momentum. Outside center Stephen Brown, playing in his first game for Stanford, scored in the fifth and then again in the twelfth minute. For both tries, Brown smashed through the Santa Clara back line, shedding multiple tacklers and fending off others with well-placed stiff-arms. Both conversions by McCormick were successful, giving Stanford a commanding 45-12 lead. McCormick then completed his own hat trick, scoring again in the sixteenth minute. With another good kick, the score was 52-12, Stanford. However, after a defensive lapse, Santa Clara was able to sneak a man around the blindside, scoring at twenty-two minutes but missing the kick. Stanford recovered, coming back to ice the game with two more tries. After a long break by wing Mike McGhie, prop Marcus Jamison dove near the post to score at the twenty-four minutes in, with the McCormick kick again successful. Stephen Brown concluded the scoring, matching McCormick's hat trick with another diving score with six minutes to go. McCormick again converted easily, leaving the final score 66-17.
