Even as we are developing lithographic and scanning-probe tools capable of finer and finer manipulation, researchers are realizing the power of a nano-assembly tool that has been around for billions of years: biology.

            Through genetic engineering, pre-existing biological units can be modified to function as a nano-assembler or a component of a biological/inorganic hybrid system or both.  Researchers have found many advantages to utilizing nature on the molecular scale.
